Beginner Tutorial for Easy to Sew Quilted Reversible Placemats with CORNERS

Learn how to sew a Reversible Quilted placemat WITH CORNERS. Learn how to sew corner seams, trim corners and how to push corners out to the right side of your placemat/project.

A Beginner Tutorial for Quilted Reversible Placemats with 90-degree Angled Corners

The title alone MAY sound complicated and confusing for a beginner seamstress but if you have practiced some basic sewing skills, I’m confident you CAN make these Easy to Sew Quilted Reversible Placemats with Right Angle Corners!

FIRST STEP…

Follow this Easy Sew Placemats post for all the MATERIALS, STEP by STEP photos and main directions; just DON’T cut rounded corners. (This link will open in a new tab making it easier for you to switch back and forth between tabs)

An extra helpful sewing tool to have for turning placemats and any projects ‘right side out’ is a BAMBOO POINT TURNER

SECOND STEP…Marking Seam Intersection & Stitching

  • Mark intersection of seams (measure from fabric edge, the seam allowance amount, to where corner is, using a fabric pencil or washable pen with a DOT. This dot is where you will leave the needle DOWN in the fabric.
  • Lift up the sewing machine foot and turn the fabric.
  • Put the sewing machine foot back down and continue stitching seam on new seam line.
Sew 90-degree Right Angle Corner. Mark intersections of Seams where corner is to be sewn.

THIRD STEP… Trimming Corner Seams

Trimming seam allowances for a 90-degree right angle corner. Cut diagonally across the corner seam being careful to not cut the corner stitching.

You’ll trim seam allowances just like in the main placemat directions, but with corners, you clip diagonally across the two seams being careful to NOT cut the corner stitching.

FOURTH STEP…Turning Corners Right Side Out

You can use your fingers to push the corners out or use a BAMBOO POINT TURNER tool.

Best Notion for Turning Fabric Corners- Use a Bamboo Point Turner
Bamboo Point Turner; A great notion to have for pushing fabric to a good looking pointed corner!

Last Step but NOT Least…Finishing Details

After the placemat corners are all turned to the right side, go back to the post for easy sew placemats for finishing. (Just switch tabs if you already clicked on the link above)

HELPFUL VIDEO FOR THE ABOVE STEPS…

I did a helpful FB Live Video showing the steps for the construction of these placemats- ENJOY! (Apparently this video will only play if you have a Facebook account)
