Ideas Using Buttons
Are you a beginner seamstress or crafter and need Ideas Using Buttons? There are practical and decorative sewing buttons for crafting and garment construction, and very unique, exquisite, and ornate buttons for collectors. I’m not a collector but I do have fun finding buttons for my many sewing projects.
I will give you some ideas using buttons AND show you pictures of buttons I’ve used for past projects. Embellish with sewing buttons: add FUN finishing touches to your project as well as great VISUAL appeal!
Adding Decorative Buttons to Clothing
When I first started sewing, I would just pick the simplest of buttons to sew on my garments; buttons with NO personality. One time I had made a blouse, I couldn’t find any PLAIN buttons that would match the color of the fabric I had used, and started looking at some more decorative sewing buttons. I found some buttons that I absolutely LOVED and from that day forward I vowed to never use PLAIN buttons again! The following pictures are of some garments I’ve made showing the fabric and FUN buttons I chose.
Theme Buttons add character to Hand Stitched Projects
I enjoy Cross-Stitching and REALLY look forward to adding the finishing touches. The backstitch is one of the finishing stitches and really brings the picture to life! I also enjoy adding buttons as part of the finishing touch, bringing more visual appeal and adding some 3D fun!
Theme Buttons to Wall Hung Quilts
If you are making a quilt to be used as a wall hanging, buttons are a great way to add texture to your quilt. There are many decorative themed buttons for this very purpose! You can also make buttons as the focal point of your quilt. If you have a button collector in your family, sewing buttons to a quilt front would be a great way to display all those buttons.
Buttons for Decor
You can put buttons in a big glass vase or other clear container and use as a decoration for your sewing room.
Kids LOVE Buttons
Kids love to play with buttons and look at all the different buttons. You can put buttons in a box of some sort and I guarantee your kids/grandkids would LOVE to run their fingers thru the buttons. Our local quilt store has a bucket of buttons, and every time we were in that quilt shop, my youngest son who was about 3 at the time, went straight to the button pail! He’d sit there and run his fingers thru the buttons, sometimes finding some real cool buttons! He couldn’t take the buttons home but tried to hide them in the bottom of the pail to try and find next time!

I hope that these IDEAS USING BUTTONS will help you, the beginner seamstress, give you ideas on how to use decorative buttons in your sewing projects! Check out my other post, sewing ideas for beginners.
