Fabric Strip Crafts
Hello- this particular post happened as a result of preparing for our annual craft fair. I say ‘our craft fair’ because myself, one of my sisters, and our mother share a booth together; we each bring our own items to sell! We have a fun day sitting and talking to each other and craft fair patrons.
I’ve had several different setups over the years for my sewing craft ‘Batik Lover’s Quilts’ and this year, I decided to try a new set up. We are always next to other booths and I wanted my display to have a background so my mini wall quilts stand out more.
I had a challenge for my background- it must be light weight and have an easy set up! I thought it would be a pretty simple thing to make something with fabric strips. I started searching ‘Fabric Strip Crafts‘ and my mind went crazy! There were SO many ideas of things to make with fabric strips that I actually started a new Pinterest Board-Fabric Strip Crafts- Ideas and ‘How-To’ .

How to Make a Hanging Fabric Strip Background
The overall process is not difficult, just takes a bit of time as you see in the photo above, there are numerous strips of fabric. You can make your fabric strips any width/length you desire! You can choose any type/color/design of fabric you’d like!
Choose your fabric
This is a great way to use fabric scraps or maybe you have fabric just laying around from a “just gotta have it” purchase. You can have any design of fabric, any color or any type of fabric. I’d suggest to use cotton fabric or cotton-knit. Just keep one thing in mind- if you want your fabric strips to look wrinkle free while hanging, you may want to iron your strips.
I chose a darker gray cotton fabric.
Choose your fabric strip size
For my Fabric Strip Background, the strips are 4″ wide and approximately 48″ in length.
I chose the amount of fabric based on my length of fabric; which means I bought about 1 2/3 yards of fabric.
How to cut your fabric strips
IF you are using cotton fabric, you can tear your fabric strips on the length wise grain of fabric. You’ll make a small cut mark every ____ inches. (You’ll choose your width of strip) Grip each side of the fabric at each CUT mark and start tearing.

After all your strips are cut, you can use a rotary ‘pinking’ blade to trim off all sides of your fabric strips.

After you have all your strips cut and edges finished, the next step is to decide what you will use to hang your strips with.
